A last-minute penalty by Scott McGleish handed Wycombe a share of the points in an exciting encounter against Peterborough United as Wanderers matched their fellow promotion rivals at Adams Park.
Stefan Oakes opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick on five minutes before Posh turned the game on its head in the second half with strikes from George Boyd and Liam Hatch.
But McGleish showed no nerves in the final minute to fire home a penalty after being felled in the area, and Wycombe keep up the heat on their promotion rivals near the top of the table.
Paul Lambert had had to deal with a difficult selection headache during the week with captain David McCracken and Sergio Torres available for action again after injury, and the 'gaffer' opted to recall the Argentinian playmaker in place of Aston Villa loanee Chris Herd.
And Torres almost made a dream start to his return to the side when he pounced on a brilliant left-wing cross from Stefan Oakes, but defender Chris Westwood managed to make a block on the winger's effort from 12 yards.
Wycombe were enjoying a high-tempo start to the game, spurred on by a bumper crowd inside Adams Park, and it wasn't long until Stefan Oakes opened the scoring with a moment of magic that few in this division are capable of.
Having fired home a 35-yard free-kick past Morecambe in March, the ex-Leicester man repeated the trick inside five minutes - albeit from a slightly shorter distance. Leon Johnson was clipped from behind when attempting to flick the ball through, and Oakes stepped up to smash the ball past £400,000 goalkeeper Joe Lewis.
Adams Park erupted into raptures in celebration of another goal-of-the-season contender from the midfielder and Wycombe had made a fantastic start to a crucial encounter between the two promotion contenders.
Three moments later, another set-piece from Oakes drew a save from Lewis when the goalscorer fizzed in a low free-kick from the right wing, and the highly-rated keeper was forced to tip the ball behind for a corner at the near post. From the resulting flag-kick, Tommy Doherty mishit a volley and Lewis dropped a cross as Peterborough's defence showed signs of panic.
With Doherty and Gary Holt marshalling the midfield superbly, chances were hard to come by for the visitors, and when £260,000 signing George Boyd found an inch of space on the edge of the box, Russell Martin intervened with a smart block to stop the shot.
The game then progressed into a high tempo midfield battle but Wanderers looked dangerous every time they went forward, and Boro left-back Jamie Day went into the book on 28 minutes for a late foul on Torres.
Seven minutes later, a succession of fantastic corners from Stefan Oakes caused all sorts of problems for the Posh backline, with Lewis looking slightly nervous every time the ball entered the six-yard box. One sliced punch from the tall stopper almost fell for Scott McGleish but United managed to scrap the ball clear to prevent themselves from falling further behind.
31-goal man Aaron McLean was being well looked after by the Blues' defence and his only real chance of the first half was a difficult header from a 41st minute corner, but the ball sailed harmlessly wide as signs of frustration became apparent on the faces of the visitors.
Charlie Lee and Leon Knight both entered the referee's notebook within a minute of each other for fouls as the referee tried to keep a lid on the rising tension of such an important match, and both teams were probably quite content to hear the half-time whistle after two minutes of stoppage time.
Half-Time: Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 Peterborough United
Stefan Oakes attempted to begin the second half as he did in the first by firing a free-kick goalwards from 40 yards, and keeper Joe Lewis was forced to nervously clamber away as he saw the ball fly just past the post.
But Peterborough had clearly been given a stern talking to at half-time and came out stronger in the first half, with Dean Keates being denied by a brave block by Leon Johnson and Aaron McLean volleying over from inside the box on 53 minutes. Charlie Lee tested the handling of Frank Fielding from 35 yards but the Blues' keeper clung on to the ball admirably with George Boyd waiting to pounce.
Wycombe rode the first storm of pressure, though, and Posh boss Darren Ferguson reacted by throwing on tall striker Liam Hatch in place of Scott Rendell. Within a minute of coming on, Hatch latched onto a through ball and held it up for Dean Keates to shoot, but the United midfielder's effort was blocked inside the box.
Jamie Day was then perhaps not to see a second yellow for bringing down Sergio Torres, and from the resulting free-kick Mike Williamson saw a shot deflected out for a corner. Russell Martin fizzed it in and Chris Whelpdale was relieved to see his header fly past the post from inside his own six-yard box.
Ex-Premiership man Micah Hyde was then introduced on 64 minutes as Darren Ferguson switched to a new formation with winger Whelpdale being replaced, and within a minute Peterborough were level courtesy of an unfortunate deflection off the boot of Leon Johnson.
The ball was worked to George Boyd on the left of the box and although his drilled effort would have been met by Frank Fielding, a touch by Johnson took the ball past his keeper to level the scores on 66 minutes.
Paul Lambert reacted immediately by replacing Leon Knight with new boy Delroy Facey, who was brought on to add strength and height to the front line as Wycombe looked to regain the lead. And he showed promising signs with his first few touches, linking up well with Scott McGleish, and it became clear that both sides knew they really had to give their all to take three points.
And Facey could have made the perfect start to his debut when he met Craig Woodman's cross on 75 minutes, but he could only knock the ball back into the six-yard box as he strained to reach it.
Wanderers were then dealt a scare when Scott McGleish went down after a collision with the keeper, but after receiving treatment, he was back on his feet to rejoin the attack. Craig Woodman then saw a cross-shot turned over the bar by a Posh defender as the presence of Facey seemed to alarm the Posh defence.
But disaster struck on 83 minutes when, after a dubious decision from the referee, Peterborough took advantage of a free-kick in a dangerous position to take the lead. A cross from the left was met by the head of Liam Hatch whose header was too strong from Frank Fielding and despite some calls for a foul by Chris Westwood in the process, the goal stood to give Posh the lead.
John Sutton replaced Craig Woodman in an attempt to salvage the points and it was Sutton's involvement which gave Wanderers a lifeline on 90 minutes. The tall striker chested the ball down to Scott McGleish who was barged from behind, and the prolific goalscorer made no mistake from the spot to cap off a rollercoaster second half.
Wanderers now look ahead to the trip to MK Dons next weekend and if Paul Lambert's side can show the same steely resolve as they did this afternoon then they could pick up more crucial points in their push for promotion.
