John Hampden Grammar School have been crowned the 'Champions of England' after their Year 9 team won the ESFA Cup Final at Huish Park earlier this month.

With two Wanderers youngsters in their ranks, as well as Darius Beeks - the grandson of chairman Ivor - the Marlow Hill school endured a tense battle with their Lancaster School (Leicestershire) counterparts but clinched the trophy courtesy of Tom Coleman's second-half strike.

Aided by an excellent playing surface at the home of Yeovil Town, John Hampden dominated possession with Beeks, Adam Thomas and Alex Jansons driving the midfield forward while captain Liam Ansell and Kristian Fuzi were a constant threat on the wings.

However, it was Lancaster who came closest to opening the deadlock on 35 minutes when a free-kick floated towards the back post but an incredible double save from Wanderers youngster Matt Ingram in the Hampden goal kept the scores level at half-time.

Lancaster were doing their best to thwart Hampden's attacking prowess but they were helpless to prevent the winning goal midway through the second period when a superb corner-kick routine found its way to Tom Coleman, who chested the ball down and volleyed the ball into the top corner.

A resilient defensive display kept Lancaster at bay as the game drew to a close and the final whistle was met by wild celebrations as Hampden rejoiced in their excellent trophy win. They will now go on to represent England against the national champions from the rest of the UK in a tournament in Glasgow on May 30th.

Hampden's achievements will be rewarded on Sunday evening with a tribute on the pitch ahead of Wycombe's play-off fixture with Stockport County.

Wycombe Wanderers would like to congratulate John Hampden on their success and wish them all the best for the UK championship.
